Deep within the mesmerizing rolling meadows, resided a young shepherd. His existence was essentially untarnished, and unsophisticated. His main role was mainly to care for his flock of sheep.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the wind through the solo tree on the peak were his constant companions. Day in day, looking out for his responsibilities inculcated in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. In one such instance out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome plan.
Narratives of wild beasts hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy chose to leveraged this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.
One day he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills for rescue but discovered no wolf.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This trick continued for a couple of more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf did attack the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and read more alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once broken, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
